JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Bibi Valentin.

Etching on cream laid paper, 1859. 152x227 mm; 6x9 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2), with the left hand defined. Crowned coat-of-arms with a fleur-de-lys watermark. A superb impression with warm plate tone and all the fine details printing clearly and with crsip, inky plate edges.

Like Souper à Trois Sous, the etchings of Bibi Valentin and Bibi Lalouette, children of Whistler's friends, were completed in Paris during the fall of 1859. These delicate, sketch-like etchings are a departure from the more formal, perspective-laden compositions of the "Thames Set.' Kennedy 50.
