JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Chelsea Rags.

Lithograph, 1888. 180x159 mm; 7 1/8x6 1/4 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately only 13. Ex-collection Thomas R. Way, Whistler's printer (Lugt 2456, lower left recto). A very good impression of this scarce print.

Like the preceeding lot, this view shows the unpretentious façade of a London rag shop. In this case, the shop's location is Whistler's Chelsea neighborhood. The style of his lithographs from this period is virtually interchangeable with etchings, like Exeter Street, lot 118.

This subject was widely published in the journal Albermarle, in 1891. Consequently, Whistler's lithographs of the 1880s/1890s received greater widespread attention than his extremely limited etchings of the period. Way 22; Levy 35; Spink 26.
