The view depicted shows the unpretentious façade of a London rag shop. In this case, the shop's location is in Whistler's Chelsea neighborhood.
After just a handful of impressions were printed for the artist, like the current impression, this subject was widely published in the journal Albermarle, in 1891. Consequently, Whistler's lithographs of the 1880s/1890s received greater widespread attention than his extremely limited etchings of the period. Way 22; Levy 35; Spink 26.
