JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Chelsea Wharf.

Etching on thin, cream laid Japan paper, 1863. 91x190 mm; 3 5/8x7 1/2 inches, full margins. First state (of 2), before the butterfly lower right. Titled "Cheyne Walk Chelsea" by Whistler in pencil, lower right recto. The composition traced in pencil on the verso. A very good impression of this extremely scarce proof, with printer's ink smudges and thumbprints in the margins recto.

This etching was made soon after Whistler moved to Chelsea, on the bank of the Thames, in 1863. The original etched copper plate for this subject, with cancellation lines, is in the collection of The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. Kennedy 89.
