JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Dordrecht.

Etching and drypoint, printed in dark, brownish black on antique, cream laid paper, 1884-86. 151x226 mm; 6x8 7/8 inches (sheet), full margins. MacDonald's second state (of 2), before cancellation. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp." in pencil on the tab, lower left. A brilliant impression of this extremely scarce etching with warm plate tone and strong contrasts, with the wiping strokes distinct in the water.

MacDonald cites only 12 known impressions of this etching. The current impression is similar to another impression "with soft graduated tone" now at the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, ME (formerly in the collection of Mortimer Menpes, London).

We have found only 2 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Kennedy 242; Glasgow 259.
