JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Dordrecht.

Etching and drypoint printed in dark, brownish black on antique, cream laid paper, 1884-86. 151x226 mm; 6x8 7/8 inches (sheet). MacDonald's second state (of 2), before cancellation. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp." in pencil on the tab, lower left. A brilliant impression of this exceedingly scarce etching with warm plate tone and strong contrasts, with the selective wiping strokes in the water.

MacDonald cites only 12 known impressions of this etching. The current impression is similar to the impression "with soft graduated tone" now at the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, ME (formerly in the collection of Mortimer Menpes, London). Kennedy 242; Glasgow 259.
