Drypoint on cream laid paper, 1873-74. 208x133 mm; 8 1/4x5 1/4 inches, full margins. Sixth state (of 11), before the heavy horizontal shading in the upper background. Possibly an edition of 25 in the sixth and seventh states combined (MacDonald notes that Whistler may have editioned this subject, indicated by the number inscriptions lower right on several impressions, including this current impression). Inscribed "* 8." in pencil, lower right (the inscription is similar to the impressions in the sixth and seventh states at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, respectively). A brilliant, early impression of this extremely scarce print.
We have found only 4 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Most recently, a fifth state impression, sold at Swann, on May 13, 1999, auction 1826, lot 227; an eighth state impression, sold at Swann, on April 27, 2010, auction 2112, lot 247; and fourth state impression sold at Swann, on October 26, 2011, auction 2258, lot 255.
