JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Drury Rags.

Lithograph on antique, cream laid paper, 1888. 147x160 mm; 5 3/4x6 1/4 inches, wide margins. A very good impression of this scarce print.

We have found only 4 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years.

This quickly-sketched composition is typical of Whistler's lithographs from the 1880s onward. He made most of his lithographs at this time via transfer drawing papers, which allowed him to draw the scene from life and then have Thomas Way, his printer, transfer the drawing to a stone for printing.

According to Spink, the presence of a hand colored impression of this lithograph in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, suggests that Whistler may have been thinking of this subject as a color lithograph too (Spink, et al, p. 128). Way 21; Levy 34; Spink 25.
