Proprietary watermark or countermark with the letters HGH. A brilliant, early impression of this extremely scarce print, with richly-inked burr throughout.

A portrait of Ann Jane Leyland (1805-1877) the mother of Whistler's important patron, Frederick Richards Leyland. F. R. Leyland was a Liverpool shipping magnate and famous art collector. He commissioned one of Whistler's best known works, Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room, in the mid-1870s. Kennedy 103.
