According to Spink, et als, this is Whistler's first lithograph made using a new transfer paper prepared especially for him by the Parisian printer Lemercier. It allowed Whistler to explore a greater range of tones in his lithographs and thereby create more natural representations. Way 70; Levy 98; Spink 106.
