JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
La Rémateuse.

Etching, 1858. 113x90 mm; 41/2x31/2 inches, 11/4-inch margins. Second state (of 2). Marginal mat stain. A good, dark impression.

A key figure in the late 19th-century etching revival in both America and Europe (though born in Lowell, Massachusetts, he worked most of his career in London), Whistler (1834-1903) was perhaps the most influential printmaker of his time and, as an admirer of Rembrandt's work, was highly instrumental in disseminating his influence. This is one of several etchings of peasants that he made while working in Paris during the late 1850s (see also lots 42, 51, 86, 87, 104 and 111). Kennedy 14.
