JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
La Vieille aux Loques.

Etching and drypoint on tissue-thin Japan paper, 1858. 208x147 mm; 8 1/8x5 7/8 inches, 3/4-inch margins. Third state (of 3). From Twelve Etchings from Nature. A brilliant, richly-inked impression.

Whistler drew this subject in Paris around the same time as The Rag Gatherers and La Marchande de Moutarde, (lots 6 and 7 respectively), with which there are clear compositional similarities. This is often among the most sumptuously-printed subjects from the "French Set," along with Street at Saverne(lot 16), with strong chiaroscuro effects acheived through a multitude of deeply-etched, overlapping lines and rich inking of the plates on warm-toned Japan papers like the sheet for this impression.
