We have found only 10 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years.
The style of this etching and the following lot are considerably less rigid than contemporaneous prints by Whistler, evident that he was attempting another new style, possibly seeking a more realistic, drawn-directly-from nature affect in his etchings. This approach reaches a crescendo in the Venice etchings 20 years later. Kennedy 36.
