JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Little Dordrecht.

Etching printed in dark brownish black on cream laid paper, circa 1880. 95x130 mm; 3 3/4x5 1/4 inches, full margins. With the unsigned paper tab lower left. A superb, richly-inked impression of this very scarce print.

Whistler's first trip to Holland was in 1858, with Amsterdam the terminus of his sketching tour through northern France and the Rhine Valley. He returned to Amsterdam in the summer of 1863 and again in 1882.

This etching and the following lot date from a subsequent trip to Holland, during 1884, with the Dutch artist Carel Storm van's Gravesande. In these views from the water's edge, he continued with the style he had perfected in Venice in 1879-80. Kennedy 243.
