JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Longshoremen.

Etching on tissue-thin, cream laid Japan paper, 1859. 152x225 mm; 6x8 7/8 inches, full margins. A brilliant, richly-inked, luminous impression with warm plate tone and inky plate edges.

This etching shows dockworkers (and a woman and child at the far right), at a riverside tavern on the Thames. It is among Whistlers most freely-drawn subjects from the "Thames Set' and a precursor to his everyday scenes of laundresses, bead-stringers and working men in Venice from the late 1870s/ early 1880s.
