JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Nocturne: Furnace.

Etching and drypoint printed in brownish black on cream laid paper, 1879-80. 166x231 mm; 6 5/8x9 1/8 inches. Eighth state (of 8), after cancellation. Possibly a unique proof, aside from the edition of approximately 30. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp" in pencil on the tab lower left. From Twenty-Six Etchings. A very good impression.

The Venetian blacksmith's workshop pictured here recalls The Forge, lot 76A, that Whistler made nearly 20 years earlier. The canal-side view into the workshop is also reminiscent of his earliest etchings, from Paris during the late 1850s, of The Rag Gatherers and La Marchande de Moutarde, lots 6 and 7. Kennedy 213.
