JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Old Hungerford Bridge.

Etching on cream laid paper, 1861. 139x210 mm; 5 1/2x8 1/4 inches, wide margins. Third state (of 3). A very good impression with warm plate tone.

This is one of several etchings of bridges from the "Thames Set" and the only one where the artist's vantage point appears to be well above the water level. Workers can be seen working high up on the bridge at the left, removing suspension chains. Linking the south bank of the Thames with Hungerford Market on the north, the bridge was being demolished in order to make way for the Charing Cross railway bridge when Whistler etched this view.
