JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Courtyard, Brussels.

Etching printed in dark, brownish black on antique, cream laid paper, 1887. 215x126 mm; 8 1/2x5 inches. One of only several known impressions. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp" in pencil on the tab, lower left. Ex-collection Henry Harper Benedict (see Lugt 2936). A superb impression of this extremely scarce etching.

According to MacDonald, "The Courtyard, Brussels dates from 1887. Whistler was in Brussels in mid-September 1887. The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. It was first sold on 21 December 1887."

MacDonald cites only 7 known impressions, including those now in the Art Institute, Chicago; the Cleveland Museum of Art; Colby College Museum of Art; Freer Art Gallery, Washington, DC; The Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow; the Library of Congress, Washington, DC; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Kennedy 355; Glasgow 345.
