JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Forge.

Drypoint on cream laid paper, 1861. 195x315 mm; 7 5/8x12 3/8 inches, full margins. Fourth state (of 4). A superb impression with richly-inked burr.

This is one of two French subjects included in the "Thames Set" along with Becquet, lot 57, and was made in the fall of 1861 while Whistler was working on a major seascape painting there (The Coast of Brittany, now in the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford). The rich, heavy black inking and the glow of light eminating from the fire at the left anticipate Whistler's Venice etchings, notably Nocturne, lot 93. Kennedy 68.
