JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Girl.

Lithograph on antique cream laid paper, circa 1891. 222x116 mm; 8 3/4x4 3/4 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 50. Ex-collection Rosalind Birnie Philip, Whistler's sister-in-law (Lugt 405, verso). A very good impression of this scarce lithograph.

According to Spink, Whistler likely drew this lithograph in late October/early November 1891 when he was working with the printer Belfond in Paris on experiments in color lithography. He might have intended this as the black "key stone" for an unrealized color lithograph of a draped, standing model (along the lines of his Draped Figure, Standing, color lithograph, 1891, printed by Belfond; Spink 46). Way 159; Levy 188; Spink 47.
