JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Music Room.

Etching and drypoint printed in dark brownish black on antique, cream laid paper, 1859. 145x215 mm; 5 3/4x8 1/2 inches, wide margins. MacDonald's fourth state (of 4). A brilliant, richly-inked, luminous impression of this scarce etching, with strong contrasts and selective wiping.

MacDonald lists approximately 55 impressions in public collections.

Whistler's portraits, from left to right, of his brother-in-law (and fellow printmaker) Francis Seymour Haden (see lots 39 and 40); James Reeves Traer, a member of Haden's medical practice; and Deborah Delano Haden (Whistler's half-sister), all reading around a lamp-lit table, likely at the Haden home in London. Kennedy 33; Glasgow 39.
