JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Priest's House, Rouen.

Lithograph on ivory laid paper, 1894-95. 241x160 mm; 9 1/2x6 3/8 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2). Signed with the butterfly in pencil, lower center recto. Ex-collection Howard Mansfield (Lugt 1342, verso) and Harris Whittemore (Lugt 1384a, verso). A very good impression.

This lithograph probably dates from a short trip Whistler made to Rouen by rail during August, 1894. The style of the drawing and the richness of the printing recall his lithographs from Brittany during the summer of 1893, like Vitré: The Canal (see lot 35). Way 74; Levy 112; Spink 105.
