JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Winged Hat.

Lithograph on smooth, cream wove paper, 1890. 179x174 mm; 7 1/8x6 7/8 inches, full margins (375x300 mm; 14 3/4x12 inches, sheet size). Second state (of 2). One of only several proofs printed by Thomas R. Way for a demonstration at the Art Workers' Guild, London, 1893, aside from the edition of approximately 22. Inscribed "Whistler lithograph, Demonstration printed by Way at A.W.G." in pencil, lower margin.

This is one of 2 lithograph portraits by Whistler of his sister-in-law Ethel Birnie Philip (the other is Gants de suède, 1890).

According to Spink, et al, The Winged Hat was one of two images selected by Way for printing during a demonstration and lecture on lithography that he presented to the Art Workers' Guild in May 1893. An impression bearing the inscription 'Art Worker's Guild 5-5-93/Lecture on Lithography by Way' identifies this image as the 'figure subject' mentioned in the Pennells' description of the program," Spink p. 146.

We have found only 4 other lifetime impressions at auction in the past 20 years and this is the first lifetime demonstration impression among those. Way 25; Levy 38; Spink 34.
