JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Vauxhall Bridge.

Etching on antique cream laid paper, 1861. 70x116 mm; 2 3/4x4 5/8 inches, wide margins. Second state (of 2). A very good, richly-inked impression with crisp, inky plate edges.

In this, one of the smallest Thames etchings Whistler made in the early 1860s, the focus is on the rigging and sails in the foreground, more so even than in Rotherhithe, lots 69 and 70, and the distant bridge is secondary. The cloudy sky resembles the tonal, stormy sky in Early Morning, Battersea, lots 65 and 66. Kennedy 70.
