The artist likely completed this study while on Sabbatical leave from Howard University during the summer of 1935. He studied Medieval Archaeology at the Sorbonne in Paris on a scholarship provided by the Carnegie Foundation. In the fall of the same year, he traveled in Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Italy with a Rockefeller Foundation Travel Grant to study European painting and several collections of African art.
