The Kaaterskill (or Catskill) Clove in the Catskill Mountains north-west of New York was a popular destination for Hudson River School artists (both Asher B. Durand and John Frederick Kensett painted there in the 1880s). By the late 1860s this picturesque rock outcropping had also become a tourist destination for adventure-seekers from New York City.
