JAMES ENSOR
Portrait d'Ernest Rousseau.

Drypoint on imitation Japan paper, 1887. 240x180 mm; 9 1/2x7 inches, full margins. Fourth state (of 4). Signed, titled and dated in pencil, lower margin, and counter signed in pencil, verso. A very good impression with strong contrasts and velvety burr.

The physicist Ernest Rousseau and his family were part of a progessive group of academicians living in Brussels. Their salon served as a meeting place for lively scholarly and political debate as well as a home-away-from-home for Ensor during his visits to the city early on in his artistic career. Delteil 11; Taevernier 11; Elesh 11.
