JAMES JACQUES TISSOT
L'Ambitieuse.

Etching and drypoint, 1885. 397x254 mm; 15 5/8x10 inches, full margins. From La femme à Paris. A superb, evenly-printed and richly-inked impression.

According to Wentworth, Tissot planned for the series La femme à Paris to consist of 15 etchings, based on his series of paintings executed between 1883 and 1885, in an edition of 500 prints each. However, he made only 5 of the etchings and they were never issued in a published edition.

Based on auction figures, where significantly less than 20 impressions of each etching has appeared at auction over the past 30 years, it is likely that the edition size of these prints is well shy of the 500 planned by the artist and probably even much fewer than the approximately 100 impressions of his "standard" editions.
