JAMES JACQUES TISSOT
Querelle d'Amoureux.

Etching and drypoint, circa 1876. 303x180 mm; 11 7/8x7 1/8 inches, full margins. Edition of 50. Signed in pencil, lower right. With the artist's red ink stamp (Lugt 1545, lower left recto). A very good impression of this scarce etching.

According to Wentworth, "Throughout his career Tissot (1836-1902) made psychological tension concomitant with setting. In Querelle d'Amoureux, disjunction is made tangible by the column standing between the young man, whose face is hidden, and the young woman, in lost profile, who looks away from him as she toys with her skirt, its petulant swishing made all but audible from her gesture." Wentworth 18.
