JAMES JACQUES TISSOT
Ramsgate.

Drypoint on cream laid paper, 1876. 251x353 mm; 9 7/8x13 7/8 inches, full margins. Edition of 25. With the artist's red ink stamp (Lugt 1545, lower right recto). From Ten Etchings. A superb impression of this scarce print.

Ramsgate is a seaside town in east Kent, England, one of the most easterly points of the United Kingdom and home to one of the largest marinas on the English South Coast. The construction of Ramsgate harbor, the only Royal Harbour in the United Kingdom, began in 1749 and was completed around 1850. The artist Vincent van Gogh (see lot 250) lived in Ramsgate in 1876, the same year Tissot made this drypoint, and worked as a teacher at a local school. Wentworth 22.
