JAMES MCBEY
The Deserted Palace.

Etching printed in dark brownish black on antique, cream laid paper, 1928. 207x252 mm; 8 1/4x10 inches, full margins. Edition of 80. Signed and inscribed "LXVII" in ink, lower margin. Strasburg Lily watermark. A very good, richly-inked impression with warm plate tone.

This view of a gondolier in front of a worn Venetian building façade has obvious ties to the etchings of Whistler. However, unlike Whistler, McBey frequently created his etchings from previous drawings rather than from life. Perhaps as a result, they lack the spontaneity of Whistler's etchings. Hardie 236.
