A prolific illustrator, Flagg was also an extremely patriotic citizen who designed 42 posters during the First World War. "I Want You For The Army" is probably his best known image, but ironically, the idea was not his own. Flagg's poster was based on a 1914 Alfred Leete design that originally appeared in Punch magazine and was later made into a poster by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee. It is Flagg's version, however, that has become such an important cultural icon, appearing again in WWII and adapted differently for varying causes through the present day. If the poster's illustration style is more traditional than modernistic, the concise, yet dramatic appeal of his message shows itself to be an example of modern advertising technique.
