Brooklyn-born painter and muralist James Phillips was both a member of both the Weusi art collective in Harlem and AfriCOBRA in Chicago. After attending Philadelphia College of Art in the mid 1960s, Phillips became known for improvised and vibrant compositions, paintings that reflect both the influence of African arts and the experimental New York jazz scene. His work is in the collections of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Fisk University, Howard University, and the David C. Driskell collection.
