Brooklyn-born painter and muralist James Phillips was both a member of the Weusi art collective in Harlem and AfriCOBRA. After attending Philadelphia College of Art in the mid-1960s, Phillips became known for improvised and vibrant compositions, paintings that reflect both the influence of African arts and the experimental New York jazz scene. His work is included in the collections of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Fisk University, Howard University, and the David C. Driskell collection.
