Inscribed in pencil, "Panel No. 1 / Indian Village,"; "Panel No. 2 / Buffalo Hunt"; "Panel No. 3 / Laclede and Party Landing Original site of St. Louis"; "Panel No. 4 / Plowman and Indian Lookout"; "Panel No. 5 / Indian Trouble and Early Pioneer Life"; "Panel No. 6 / Waterfront Scene"; "Panel No. 7 / Breaking the Monotony at on a Flatboat Voyage"; and "Panel No. 8 / Bloody Island Encounter and Saloon Scene" at bottom margins. All approximately 5 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches.

Born in Iowa and rasied in Colorado, James Russell Sherman would find his way to the Kansas City Art Institute, and eventually the Art Students League in New York City. At the League he was a student of legendary painter and muralist, Thomas Hart Benton.
