Born in Iowa and rasied in Colorado, James Russell Sherman would find his was to the Kansas City Art Institute, and eventually the Art Students League in New York City. At the League he was a student of legendary painter and muralist, Thomas Hart Benton. In 1938 Sherman completed a mural for the downtown Valentine Station Post Office, located in Loveland Colorado. This project was funded through the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, (TSFA).
