JAN GEORG VAN VLIET
Smell.

Etching, 1634. 242x195 mm; 95/8x73/4 inches. First state (of 2). From the Five Senses. Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark. A superb, dark and well-inked impression of this scarce print.

Van Vliet (active 1630s) worked with Rembrandt when the latter was establishing his studio in Amsterdam. Several of Rembrandt's small etched portraits were likely reworked by Van Vliet, who also made etchings based on Rembrandt's drawings and paintings. Clement de Jonghe (see lot 103) acquired all the plates from Van Vliet's "Five Senses" series from the artist's estate. Bartsch 29; Hollstein 29.
