Lewitt and Him were both born in Poland and met as young graphic designers. In 1933 they founded the Lewitt-Him studio. They emmigrated to England in 1937. Inspired by Surrealist painting, their work often played with words and images. In Britain they worked for major clients like the British Post Office, B.O.A.C. and the Festival of Britain. They also received foreign commissions. Dagens Nyheter [News of the Day], affectionately known as DN, is still one of Sweden's most popular newspapers. Lewitt-Him's image of four men reading against a complex, dawn-like background has the appearance of a blooming flower, and suggests the promise of the dawning of a new day.
