JAN MIENSE MOLENAER
The Brothel.

Etching, circa 1640-50. 155x185 mm; 6 1/8x7 1/4 inches, thread margins. Second state (of 4). Partial foolscap, with the three balls, watermark. A very good, early impression of this extremely scarce etching.

Molenaer (1610-1668) worked his entire career in his native Haarlem and shared a studio with his wife, the artist Judith Leyster (1609-1660); they wer eboth likely students of Frans Hals. Like fellow Haarlem artist Adriaen van Ostade (see lots 158-166), Molenaer often depicted interior genre scenes frequently with musicians and figures in tavern settings. Hollstein 2.
