JAN PREISLER (1872-1918) MODERNI FRANCOUZSKE UMENI. 1902.
43 1/2x28 1/2 inches. Unie, Prague.
Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins, affecting image.
A poster for an exhibition of Modern French Art in Prague sponsored by the avant-garde Czech Art group Manes of which Preisler was a founding member. He was also an editor of the Magazine Volny Smer<> , has murals decorating Prague's Municipal Hall, a masterpiece of Secession design and architecture, and he is considered one of the most important of all Czech Secession artists. This image of a peacock, an animal with whom Art Nouveau artists had almost a fetishistic relationship, is nestled in foliage amidst archetypal Art Nouveau typography. The bird's tail is adorned with the symbol of the Manes Group. "Preisler's posters belong among the best examples of Czech Secession art" (UPM p. 62). This poster exists in French and German. UPM 104.
