Sluyters was a gifted student who studied at the Rijksakademie. Primarily regarded as a painter, he was also an illustrator and poster designer. This poster is advertising Zegepraal [Victory] a novel by Israel Querido. It is typical of Sluyters' style, in that he rarely employed any outlining, preferring a pastel or watercolor-esque rendering in all of his posters. Generally this technique does not lend itself well to graphic design, but the way that Sluyters positions his swaths of colors, and constructs his compositions, always works nicely and efficiently. The image here is organized along a vertical axis, a geometric symmetry that is a major characteristic of the Dutch Art Nouveau style. Dutch Poster 106, Modern Dutch 23, Modern Poster 28.
