JAN VAN DER STRAET, CALLED STRADANUS
(Bruges 1523-1605 Florence)
Christopher Columbus, the Discovery of America.

Pen and brown ink and wash on cream laid paper mounted on card stock. 195x270 mm; 7 3/4x10 3/4 inches. Inscribed "Chrisoph Columb" in ink, lower center recto.

Provenance: Private collection, New Jersey.

Van der Straet's drawings for The Discovery of America (Americae Retectio), were engraved by Adriaen Collaert (1560-1618), a series of four engravings altogether, circa 1589.

There is another brown ink and wash drawing, possibly a study for the series which was not used for an engraving, Neptune in his Chariot Pulled by Waterhorses, circa 1589, in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, New York (accession number 1901-39-2674).
