JAN WIJGA ROYAL DUTCH AIR LINES. 1933.
39x241/2 inches. Luii & Co., Amsterdam.
Condition A: minor foxing and discoloration in image; slight tears at edges. Paper.
With no apparent thought to the connotations of the ship's history, KLM adopted the Flying Dutchman as their unofficial mascot, presumably because of the appropriate name. Many posters exist juxtaposing the ghost ship and a plane in the airline's fleet, including at least one other designed by Wijga (in 1929). The Fokker XXXVI (built entirely of wood!) pictured here apparently never went into service for KLM, as the following year the all-metal Douglas DC-2s were employed by the airline. One of several different variations in which the image remains the same but the text and the language vary. The translation of the European variations has a much more elegant tone, as they read "Legend becomes Reality. " Dutch 90 (var)
