JANE ATCHÉ (1872-1937) LA CÉLESTINE. Circa 1898.
62x42 inches, 158x107 cm. L. Charbonnier.
Condition A-: minor restoration in bottom right corner and along vertical and horizontal folds.
Although she only designed a few posters, each of Atché's forays into the graphic world resulted in refined Art Nouveau imagery. She studied with and was influenced by Alphonse Mucha, but developed her own personal style using flat colors and clear, black outlining. For this liqueur, distilled in Vichy, she presents the viewer with a poised, meditative and reverential young woman with a bottle in her hands. The sweep of her dress gracefully fills up the bottom of the image, and its bright, flat color jumps out from the image against the more detailed, darker colored wall. The background and the frame of the image depict the monastery where the liqueur was made. Rare. Wine Spectator 100.
