JANSSONIUS / MERCATOR. Iaponiae Nova Descriptio. Double-page engraved map, 345x445 mm, wide margins, Latin text on verso; hand-colored in outline; matted. Amsterdam, 1636

Additional Details

The first of several maps of Japan issued by Janssonius. The mapping is essentially the same used by his father-in-law Hondius which was published in 1606 and based on the Ortelius/Teixeira model. Janssonius has replaced the Japanese vessels from the Hondius map with European galleons, though they are still described as Japanese ships in the accompanying legend. Walter 23, Cortazzi, pl. 27; Campbell 10 (dating the map to 1647).
