JANSSONIUS, JOANNES. Nova et Accurata Japoniae, Terrae Esonis ac Insularum adjacentium. Double-page engraved map, 455x555 mm, wide margins; hand-colored and in outline; matted. Amsterdam, 1658

Additional Details

Janssonius first issued a map of Japan in 1636 based on the Dudley/Teixeira model. The present map published in 1658 represents a fairly extreme departure from the earlier map of 1636. The Dutch presence in the area constantly increased Europe's knowledge of Japan and its configuration and in this Dudley/Janssonius model the new information is incorporated. Walter 57; Campbell 22; Cortazzi, pl. 70.
