JARDIN DE PARIS. 1890.
48 1/4x34 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses, repaired tears and overpainting in margins and corners.
A startlingly festive image magically capturing the energy and excitement of this nightly, outdoor soirée. The Jardin de Paris<> was one of the summer café-concerts off of the Champs-Elysées<> which was a favorite entertainment spot in Paris. Here Cheret utilizes his colors in an unusually bold way: the sky is red with the dancing girl in the foreground caught in a circle of yellow electric light. He adds a sense of movement and tempo to the scene through the two visible dresses swirling in opposite directions. This is the larger of two formats and features more detail, specifically the fireworks and the firgures in the background. Maindron 218, Broido 250, Maitres pl. 65.
