In the early 1960s, French began to paint geometric compositions of Italian architecture, exemplified by the current work. His architectural paintings coincided with his gradual move to Rome at this time, and reflect back to similar constructed forms in Renaissance paintings by Mantegna, Botticelli and Signorelli, among others.
