Ex-collection the estate of the artist. After French's death in Rome in 1988, this self portrait remained with his Italian companion until it was passed on to the current owner (see also lots 57-74 from the same collection). Taking into account the background and the "American Scene" style of this work, it is possible that it was painted in the early 1930s during his stay with Paul Cadmus in Mallorca.
