JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT
Dans les Dunes, Souvenir du Bois de la Haye.

Etching, 1869. 119x192 mm; 43/4x75/8 inches, full margins. Second state (of 2), with the asterisk printing upper left near the plate mark. Edition of 350. From Sonnets et eaux-fortes. Adhesive stain upper edge recto, well outside the plate mark. A brilliant, dark impression.

Arguably the most influential landscape artist of the 19th-century, Corot (1796-1875) in turn was deeply inspired by the etched work of Rembrandt. The current print is compositionally similar to Rembrandt's "The Three Trees" (Bartsch 212) with several solitary trees on an open field with cloudy, distant skies and shares the earlier prints sharp contrast of light and dark. The following lot by Corot reveals a sketch-like quality indicative of many of Rembrandt's landscape etchings. Delteil 9; Melot 9.
